Being successful catamaran broker-consultants isn’t just business, it’s our lifestyle. We are Stephen & Estelle. 25+ years ago in a friend’s backyard in Cape Town, South Africa, we built our first boat then sailed the world. Discovering new places, meeting extraordinary people, and enjoying unique experiences was fun, not work! We've co-owned a catamaran manufacturer, consulted with catamaran manufacturers, managed charter companies, and taught sailing. These experiences and living aboard for 22+ years have taught us important lessons that we happily share with fellow sailors and yacht owners like you.
Today, Catamaran Guru™ is the number one go-to company for catamaran buyers. Catamarans have become so popular that the demand far outweighs the supply. This is both good and bad. Catamarans retain their value far better and for much longer than monohulls because we just don't have enough of them, so that is great for owners and sellers. The bad thing is that new catamarans are becoming more and more expensive, which can make buying a yacht harder for some. We, therefore, are constantly trying to find ways to reduce the cost of ownership for our clients. This article is a guide for people to explore new avenues to help pay for the cost of their catamarans.
Trying to sell your catamaran? As we all know, first impressions are crucial. Here are our top tips to sell your boat more quickly and for a higher price.

Catamaran builders have really focused on the 40ft “entry-level” catamaran models of late. It has a broader appeal for families and cruising couples because with these modern, more voluminous cats, you get a lot more boat at a very affordable price. The new range of 40ft catamaran models on the market today, has the same comfort and luxury appeal of that of a 50ft catamaran without the “luxury price tag”.
While the new 40-footers have the space and comfort of a much bigger boat and can easily and comfortably accommodate a family living aboard, the cost involved in maintenance, insurance, dockage etc. is still that of a 40-footer and the Fountaine Pajot’s new Lucia 40 is a great contender. With a base price around $290,000 ($450,000 fully loaded) the Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 puts a well equipped sailing catamaran within reach of a lot more cruising couples and families.
Buying a boat is a big decision, whether for live aboard, charter management or setting your boat up as a business. Buyers are often dazzled at boat shows and the image of the "dream" boat sometimes overwhelms good reasoning.
That is why we present you with this opportunity to get an in-depth look at the pros and cons of boat ownership. We try to take the drama out of ownership and make you an educated consumer!

We first reported here on July 19th (2016), that a new Leopard model was launched in Cape Town, South Africa. We now we have confirmation! Leopard Catamarans announced today that the new model 45 will be unveiled at the Annapolis boat show in October 2016. As we have mentioned before, the new Leopard 45 is probably going to replace the Leopard 44 (not confirmed) and is no doubt a model to compete with the very popular Fountaine Pajot Helia 44.
The exterior styling for this new model is more angular than the current line of Leopard catamarans. They have added a new sleek hardtop bimini, which extends all the way from the forward cockpit to the aft cockpit. Yes, they kept their signature forward cockpit with the opening door into the salon, one of the most popular features of the Leopard catamaran range. They also have kept the semi-raised helm station, another very popular feature for cruising couples.
While selling catamarans is our business and we obviously would like to sell as many catamarans as we can, we sometimes have to advise people against buying a boat. One thing we will NOT do, is tell a buyer what they want to hear to make a sale. If a boat is not a good fit for the buyer or their choice of boat does not fit their budget or sailing application, we will try to steer them right. It is quite simply the right thing to do, even if that means not selling the boat at all.
Last week we had a client who came to us for advice, expecting to be sold on one of the ownership solutions that we tout on the website. However, after Brian and his wife relayed their situation to us, we knew that they needed to go a different way. Brian will retire in 3-5 years and he and his wife want to buy a boat to liveaboard on and go cruising after retirement.
