Fort Lauderdale Boat Show & Hurricane Sandy

2012 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show and Hurricane Sandy

Fort Lauderdale, the “yachting capital of the world”, is once again the scene of a spectacular display of yachts with the opening of the 53rd International Boat Show today. The show runs from October 25-29, 2012, with more than 1200 exhibitors of yachts, marine products and accessories. For the second year running, we have a hurricane (Sandy) heading our way in Florida. Thankfully, it will only skirt us but the weather is stormy, rainy, blustery…not our usual sunny Florida. While organizers are taking precautions, the show will open for business today and is expected to be one of the best in recent years, according to the Marine Industries Association of South Florida.

We encourage boaters in Florida to be careful and to prepare, but put on your floral shirts and panama hats, then grab a frou-frou drink and visit us at the show. There is lots to see and do including some weird and wonderful inventions and concept boats. The show organizers promised a jam-packed show and record turn-out and judging from the Annapolis boat show success, I believe them!

Hurricane Sandy became a category 2 hurricane as it moved through the Caribbean and hit Cuba last night with winds in excess of 110 miles per hours. Sandy will continue to parallel the East Coast and will affect the Bahamas as a strong hurricane. Florida and southern Georgia, further away, will feel tropical storm force strength wind from the storm. Basically, heavy rain, winds and a rough seas will be the rule for the next twenty four hours in that part of the country. New England may have cause for concern as I have heard the words “perfect storm” uttered by the weather people, when Sandy merges with a cold front up in the north…not very encouraging.
