Introducing the McConaghy S49 Catamaran
An exciting new luxury performance catamaran
McConaghy Boats with a reputation for innovation, style, and performance in custom boats recently entered the luxury catamaran market. Leveraging its extensive success in state-of-the-art composite technology that has won race after race worldwide, the first production of the new semi-custom yachts begins with the McConaghy S49 catamaran.
The maiden model S49 promises to be an exciting luxury performance, blue-water sailing yacht suitable for comfortable extended cruising and capable of racking up 300 mile+ days. McConaghy Boats and Schionning Designs collaborated to create a luxury catamaran that will rival all other designs in terms of space, performance, and pedigree. The pioneering McConaghy S49 offers the same luxurious comfort and space as other production cruising catamarans, but boasts a high quality McConaghy custom yacht finish and superior performance.
Improved waterline-to-beam values and higher power-to-weight ratio along with lighter, stiffer, and stronger hull construction provides the exceptional performance. The twin dagger boards further improve windward performance. The high bridgedeck clearance and chamfer panels substantially minimize slamming. Weight is centralized to reduce pitching. Build weight is around 30% lighter than most competitor yachts.
High quality construction materials and innovative building processes result in a unique watercraft never seen before in the catamaran market. The S49 is comprised of Core-Cell foam, vinyl-ester resin infusion technology, and high quality DuPont paint on the hulls with mirror finishes. Schionning Yacht Designs’ proprietary “soft” sections improve construction time and productivity.
The rig, sails, and helm station are designed specifically to facilitate single-handed sailing easy and uncomplicated. All lines run back to the helm station with electric winches controlled by foot buttons for hands-free operation. A static control station operates single line reefing, furling headsails, and self-tacking jib for unparalleled ease of handling. The raised helm station offers a comfortable two-seater position bigger with head and shoulders above the cabin top for perfect panoramic visibility.
The efficient alloy mast and boom are outfitted with a fully battened square head mainsail resulting in a very powerful rig. For light breezes, the S49 is outfitted with a furling screecher on the bowsprit or optional spinnaker if requested. The entire sail plan is configured to be simple, fast, and efficient.
Wide side decks and flat, uncluttered foredeck ensure safety in rough sea conditions. Large deck lockers offer ample, secure storage. The fold-down bimini with zip-in enclosures provides full protection from the elements. Generously sized line storage boxes increase helm station safety by ensuring lines are kept out of the way.
The S49’s unusually roomy cockpit delivers a very open, comfortable feel. The additional space is made possible with advanced engineering of the boxed bridgedeck. The design eliminates the back beam and moves the mainsheet track up and onto the cabin top which is visible and controlled from the helm station. The forward facing navigation station has full, 360-degree visibility.
The cockpit and saloon are on one level with no steps or obstacles. The saloon and galley areas are considerably bigger and open than most catamarans in this size range. The increased volume is made possible by eliminating the cross bulkhead and placing the mast in the most optimal position that opens up the space usually restricted by the mast position. The forward opening windows are another unique feature of the S49, allowing for abundant ventilation throughout the living areas lending the feeling of luxurious, open loft living.
The master suite to starboard has a king-size bunk, his-and-hers vanities, hanging closets and storage, separate toilet and shower stall, and washer/dryer. The two guest cabins with queen-size bunks on the port side have en-suite heads with a shared shower cubicle in the center to optimize space. Opening ports and hatches in the deck above and hatches aft of the bunk provide a cool open feel below.
Propulsion for the S49 comprises of two Yanmar 50 HP engines, sail-drives, and folding props. The separate engine rooms are accessed from deck hatches, aft. The S49 also has a 6KW generator with air conditioning throughout.
This is a serious blue water cruising catamaran capable of making around the world passages with high daily mileage running in comfort and with safety and minimal slamming. The McConaghy pedigree sets this ground-breaking multihull apart!
