McConaghy S49 Presentation

The new McConaghy S49 catamaran promises to be an exciting luxury, performance blue water yacht. The S49 is suitable not only for comfortable extended cruising but capable of an impressive 300+mile days. McConaghy Boats and Schionning Designs developed this S49 catamaran that will rival all other designs in space, performance and pedigree. The McConaghy S49 offers the same luxurious comfort and space as a regular production cruising catamaran, but boasts a high quality McConaghy custom yacht finish.

Improved waterline to beam values and higher power to weight ratio allows for exceptional performance. The S49 is much lighter, stiffer and stronger than most catamarans in her class, which equals exceptional performance and the twin dagger boards further improve windward performance. The high bridgedeck clearance and chamfer panels substantially minimize slamming. Weight is centralized to reduce pitching and build weight is around 30% lighter than most of the competition.

Quality Construction

High quality construction materials and building processes are used in the building of the S49: Corecell foam and Vinylester resin infusion technology, high quality Dupont paint on the hulls with mirror finishes and the Schionning Yacht Designs’ proprietary “soft” sections improves construction time and productivity.

Mast and Sails

The rig, sails and helm station were designed specifically to make single-handed sailing easy and uncomplicated. The raised helm station offers a comfortable two-seater position with head and shoulders above the cabin top for perfect all around visibility. All lines run back to the helm station with electric winches controlled by foot buttons for hands free operation. Single line reefing, furling headsails and self-tacking jib, all operated from a static control station, makes handling a breeze. The efficient alloy mast and boom is outfitted with a fully battened square head mainsail, resulting in a very powerful rig. For light breezes, the S49 is outfitted with a furling screecher on the bowsprit or optional spinnaker if requested. The entire sail plan is set up to be simple, fast and efficient. Twin dagger boards improve windward performance. Wide side decks and flat, uncluttered foredeck ensures safety going forward in rough conditions with large deck lockers for storage. The fold-down bimini provides full protection from the elements including, zip-in enclosures. Large storage boxes at the helm station for all the lines ensure that the lines are kept out of the way and the helm area safe.

Cockpit and Interior Living Areas

The S49 has a huge cockpit with a very open comfortable feel. This is made possible with the advanced engineering of the boxed bridgedeck, by eliminating the back beam and moving the mainsheet track up onto the cabin top, which is visible and controlled from the helm station. The cockpit and saloon are on one level with no steps or obstacles. The saloon and galley areas are much bigger and open than most other catamarans in this size range. The increased volume is made possible by eliminating the cross bulkhead and placing the mast in the most optimal position that opens up the space usually restricted by the mast position. The forward opening windows are another unique feature of the S49, allowing for great ventilation throughout the living areas to give the feeling of luxurious, open loft living. The forward facing navigation station has full, 360-degree visibility. The master suite to starboard has a king-size bunk, his and hers vanities, hanging closets and storage, separate toilet and shower stall and washer/dryer. The two guest cabins with queen-size bunks on the port side have en-suite heads with a shared shower cubicle in the center to optimize space. There are opening ports, hatches in the deck above and hatches aft of the bunk that gives it a cool open feel below.

Propulsion

Propulsion for the S49 comprises of two Yanmar 50 HP engines, sail-drives and folding props. The separate engine rooms are accessed from deck hatches, aft.  The S49 also has a 6KW generator with air conditioning throughout. This is a serious blue water cruising catamaran capable of making around the world passages, with high daily mileage in comfort and safety and minimal slamming.
