Southern comfort food…you can’t beat it! Especially when it is from southern Africa! My sister-in-law Paula, sent me this ooey-gooey sweet and savory South African grilled sandwich (braaibroodjie) recipe. These braaibroodjies” are a favorite side dish for South Africans at every BBQ (braai) and it is so easy to make. This recipe calls for Dutch cheeses and sweet chutney along with a “smoortjie” spread that takes it into a heavenly realm.
It is worth the extra bit of effort over a regular grilled cheese!
Ingredients
For the Braaibroodjie:
- 8 slices bread – any bread will do but we like sourdough
- 3 T butter, softened
- 3 T mayonnaise, good quality
- 1/2 c (100 g) boerenkaas cheese, grated; you can substitue Edam cheese
- 5/8 c (70 g) emmenthal cheese, grated; you can substitute Cheddar cheese
- 4 slices of Mozzarella cheese
Fo the Smoortjie:
- 1 T olive oil
- 1 chopped onion
- 2 chopped tomatoes
- 3 T chutney (Mrs Balls peach chutney is favored
Directions
Make the Smoortjie:
- Heat the oil in a pan on the stove.
- Add the onion and cook over low heat until soft and golden.
- Add the tomatoes and chutney then simmer for 5 minutes.
Make the Braaibroodjie:
- Lay the bread on a board.
- Mix the butter and mayo then spread on one side of the bread.
- Turn 4 slices of the bread over and layer the cheeses and smoortjie on the unbuttered side.
- Top with remaining slices to make sandwiches.
- Place the sandwiches in a hinged braai grid (this is a grilling basket commonly used for grilling fish).
- Cook over low coals.
Don’t have a grill or braai grid? Then cook in a frying pan on the stove over medium high heat or a electric griddle on high.
