1987 Richard Woods Flica F3 Vessel Summary

S/V Snowflake is a 1987 35 foot Richard Woods Flica F3 catamaran production boat built by Palamos Boatbuild Ltd in Cornwall, England. A 1988 South West Export Award Winner, the Flica was designed and built for comfort and crossing oceans.

Snowflake is fitted out for long distance cruising, has sailed across the Atlantic multiple times, and most recently with the current owner in December 2017. (EU VAT has been paid)

Many upgrades and extras added from 2014 through 2019.

NOTE: Starboard engine is Yanmar 2gm20, raw/salt water cooled (needs replacing)
Port engine is Yanmar 2gm20fc (fresh water cooled, good condition)

All lines are lead aft to the cockpit (all running rigging new 2017), enabling ease and safety of sail handling. The Furlex headsail furler (new 2014) makes reefing or furling in the Genoa (new 2017) a snap and the lazy bag system (new 2014) allows the captain to quickly drop the mainsail (new 2017) when necessary. The two backstays (rarely found on other catamarans) offer greater strength to the rig, and her whisker pole (new 2015) reaches the genoa out fully to take advantage of downwind trades. Her smaller rig (all standing rigging new 2015, inspected Jan 2018) makes her easy to handle by a couple.

In the cockpit, a sturdy stainless steel Bimini frame with canvas offers protection from the elements and an excellent location for 3 solar panels (new 2018) totaling 885 watts, which provide Snowflake with copious amounts of energy to run all electrical systems and charge devices. This catamaran is NOT a dock queen – Snowflake has not been plugged into shore power since October 2017.

Storage lockers aft, and forward provide more than enough space for fenders, lines and other items.

Inside, headroom is 6’4” throughout and the spacious design is equivalent to that of a 50’ monohull.

The windows in the saloon allow for full visibility and plenty of light (curtains all new 2014) throughout and the large seating area provides room for eight people to comfortably enjoy a meal or play a game of dominos or cards. (All cushions recovered 2014.) Below the seating area is ample storage and the saloon table can be raised in order to allow unlimited access to the storage if completing a large provision. Ample bookshelves provide room for a generous library for those lengthy passages. The teak floor (new 2014) provides a classic look and warm feeling in the saloon.

Two generous double bunks, each located in the starboard and port forward cabins offer privacy and comfort to the owner and guests. (Mattress in port forward cabin new 2014.) Storage spaces abound in both cabins, with the added luxury of having large hanging lockers in each cabin. If a 3rd bunk is needed, the starboard aft cabin can be used (currently no mattress in place).

On the starboard side, the extensive counter space in the galley provides excellent space to create meals, while offering sizable storage for dishes, cookware, and provisions. While spacious, the galley is extremely safe when under way, with many places to brace oneself while prepping meals or washing dishes. The 2 burner Eno stove and oven (new 2018) provides the chef with many options for preparing meals. A Waeco refrigerator (new 2013) offers great space for food, drinks, and its small freezer has room for several ice trays and ice packs. The 45-liter-per-hour water maker (new 2015) ensures that the crew never runs out of fresh drinking water onboard.

A large navigation table located in the port side offers space to lay out full sized charts, while also can be folded up and out of the way when not in use. Just behind the navigation table you will find a large work surface that is handy for any project and is next to a hanging wet locker.

The head is located in the port aft and contains a C-Head compost toilet (new 2017). Pull out faucet at the sink can be used as shower.

A total of four 50-liter water tanks reside in the bilges (2 located in the center of each hull). Throughout, plentiful storage is found in lockers, drawers, and in the bilges. Easy access to all bilges.

Hatches (replaced in 2014) and port lights (all re-bedded and seals replaces 2017) offer excellent ventilation.

After looking at several other makes of catamarans, it was obvious that Snowflake was the boat I was looking for. Sailing her in the Mediterranean, through heavy storms in the Gulf de Lyon, across the Atlantic Ocean, and through dark squalls in the Eastern Caribbean, she never let me down. Snowflake has been my home for 6 years. She’s great fun to sail and extremely comfortable at sea and at anchor.
