We are Stephen (travelling sailor) and Estelle (sailing traveller). After building our first boat in a friend’s backyard, we set off to sail around the globe 20+ years ago. What started out as a hair-brained idea became our life and passion. Our first crossing set us on a path to discovering, learning, and enjoying extraordinary people and experiences.
Having met the challenges of over 50,000 ocean-going miles, we have tales of nooks and crannies of the world unseen by many. As qualified ASA captains and instructors, we have helped and guided many people to become competent sailors to go cruising on their own boats. We gladly share our knowledge from boat building to boat brokerage to running a yacht charter business or just cruising the oceans. Our objective is to help sailing enthusiasts find and purchase a cruising yacht that meets their needs and achieves their dreams. We are the number one go-to company for advise on catamarans and how to lower costs of ownership.
We are delighted to connect with the growing community of cruising couples and families. We love sharing our knowledge, gained from years as live-aboard sailors. This catamaran is well-designed and laid out for safe and easy handling and sailing. Enjoy the video at right to see the spacious accommodation, modern conveniences, and beautiful sleek lines of this amazing sailing vessel.
I had a chance to do a quick walk-through on the 2016 Lagoon 42 catamaran at the Miami Boat Show in February (2016). In my opinion, it is a runaway winner among cruising catamarans! It is the perfect size live-aboard catamaran for a couple and has all the features that not only make it a comfortable live-aboard boat, but also very easy to sail and handle. It reminds me a lot of the Island Spirit 401.
It offers all the good characteristics of the Island Spirit catamaran. I always loved the wide, open scoops as well as the big cockpit and saloon of our Island Spirit, Siyaya. Lagoon has perfected that design in a very modern and sleek version with good bridgedeck clearance which is something that the Island Spirit lacked. All in all, the 2016 Lagoon 42 looks to be a great catamaran for a couple or family. It seems to perform really well and is offered at very attactive pricing.
Here's my take on it. Be sure to watch the video of the Lagoon 42 at the bottom of this page!
"London businesswoman Sarah Young has been laid to rest at sea after dying during a global yacht race." This man overboard headline from the Guardian newspaper caught my eye yesterday and made me think about safety at sea, especially after our own recent yacht delivery from Guadeloupe to Miami.
Ms. Young died after being washed overboard by a large wave while competing in the Clipper Round The World Yacht Race. Ms. Young was not tethered and did not seem to be wearing a personal Man Overboard (MOB) beacon. While we don’t know the exact circumstances of Ms. Young’s tragic death, I have to wonder that perhaps if she was tethered, perhaps she would be alive today.
Unfortunately, few of us actually heed the most basic safety rules and we become somewhat complacent.
A boat docking simulator like Dock Your Boat by sfinx-it helps beginners or experienced sailors hone their skills in the harbor. Docking a sailboat is, for most "newbies", the most difficult maneuver to make. It is also where there are the most critical eyes watching you and sometimes worrying about their own boats sitting nearby and most of our buyers and students, always fret about docking a big catamaran.
They always seem to be intimidated by the high freeboard and wide beam but by understanding the procedures and the theory behind the docking manuevres allows you to quickly master the techniques and build the skills to do a perfect docking. If you can handle docking, you can handle any other maneuver situation.
The sfinx-it team are avid sailors themselves so they have a passion for helping other sailing enthusiasts learn safer, more confident docking.
Harnessing the wind to sail the globe has been used for millennia, but wind is not just for propulsion. Small wind turbines like the AIR Silent X, manufactured by Primus Wind Power in Lakewood, Colorado, make it possible to enjoy modern conveniences while sailing. These super quiet off-grid wind turbines charge the boat’s battery banks while sailing or at anchor. As the number of electronic gadgets multiply and refrigerators and air conditioning units get larger, wind power generation is the a great way to supplement energy and to meeting these new demands.
Wind turbines on boats have been around for a while. No doubt if you have been sailing for years, you have experienced the loud, sometimes unreliable older versions. We tried several types on our previous boats and we finally opted to do away with the wind turbine because of the noise. However, Primus Wind Power offers the next generation of small, reliable, and lightweight wind turbines using a quiet carbon fiber “blue blade” that delivers an impressive energy output from a 1.2-meter rotor diameter turbine at an affordable price. Primus’ worldwide network of dealers and distributors makes repair and technical support convenient no matter where your sails take you. It seems to be a lot more quiet than the ones we used and delivers a lot more energy.
While traveling from boat show to boat show in 2015, we conducted numerous seminars and consultations all around America with sailors searching for their “dream boat”. It resulted in the sales of numerous catamarans in 2015 (FYI catamarans prices are VERY affordable now). We helped people buy catamarans of every variety, from Fountaine Pajot, Lagoon, Bali and Catana to Voyage, Leopard and everything in between. While we had a blast helping all these "newbies" find their own dream boats, we also took a good hard look at all the brands of catamarans available on the market.
We learned a lot of new things and confirmed the things we already knew about all these catamarans (older and new models). There are a few things that are just a deal breaker for us i.e. low bridgedeck clearance or a galley down arrangement and safety. It would be hard for us to compromise on those things. Performance is also a consideration but the performance cats typically has smaller accommodations for obvious reasons, so we have to compromise. Armed with this knowledge and research, we sold our Prout 45 and bought a Lagoon 450S.
