BALI 4.5 by Catana
The BALI 4.5 by Catana will be featured at the Miami Sailboat Show in February 2015. We have received the latest pictures from Catana and sailors are very impressed with this new addition to the company. With the arrival of the new BALI Catamarans, the Catana Group is positioning itself as a front-row player in the cruising catamaran market. Here are a few of the high points to look out for: SLIDESHOW & FULL REVIEW by Multihulls World Magazine
- No more unprotected stern mounted steering. The bulkhead mounted steering is new for Catana.
- No daggerboards. This makes it much easier to sail for a bigger market of cruisers.
- Solid foredeck provides the biggest and most comfortable cockpit area of any of it's competition.

Fountaine Pajot SABA 50 Sailing Catamaran Review
The SABA 50 is the biggest sailing catamaran of the Fountaine Pajot core sailing range before the flagship range, the Sanya 57 and the Victoria 67. Designed by the naval architect Olivier Racoupeau, the Saba 50 has the same excellent optimization of space and weight as the highly successful sistership, Helia 44. The designers also paid the same special attention to comfort, elegance and performance and the result is quite simply a beautiful sailing catamaran that sails remarkably well and is priced at +/- 593,000 Euro base price, well below the main competitors.

In its 137-year history, the catamaran has always garnered passionate devotees. But technological innovations in agility and speed and the foiling catamarans' spotlight in the 2013 America’s Cup have expanded its appeal and popularity to a wider audience of sailing enthusiasts. The development of the modern catamaran from the simple ocean-going Polynesian double canoe to the most impressive multihulls on the planet has accelerated even more, with all the latest innovations in structure and composite materials. Tom Weaver, the former CEO of an America’s Cup program, comments in an article by Rob Almeida of gCaptain Maritime & Offshore News: “In the next 15 years, if you are not racing a cat, you will be racing “classic” boats.”
The celebrity of the catamaran is not only swelling in racing, but also for cruising catamarans. At their conception, the atypical design enabled cats to sail faster and in shallower waters with less wind and crew than other sailing vessels. But for years the unorthodox design met with skepticism, leaving the catamaran with little commercial success. Additional challenges to adoption of early versions of cruising cats were the small, very cramped interiors by modern day standards, was heavy and lumbering handling abilities. Many sailors used to say they “were built like tanks and sailed like bricks”.
St. Croix is the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 1917 St. Croix along with the islands of St. John and St. Thomas were purchased by the United States from the Danish for military reasons. It is still a U.S. territory today with it's largest town, Christiansted. St. Croix was once an agricultural powerhouse in the Caribbean, mainly thanks to its sugar plantations. However this period ended with the rapid industrialization of the island's economy in the 1960s.
Today the main industries are tourism, agriculture and oil refinery. St. Croix is home to the Cruzan Rum Distillery which for many years used locally grown sugar cane to produce a single "dark" style rum. The quality and smoothness of the Cruzan Estate Rums has won more than 30 Spirit Awards. Love, love love this Rum!
We are often asked if production catamarans like Fountaine Pajot, Lagoon and Leopard can actually cross oceans and perform well. The answer is a resounding YES! The myth: Production yachts, weather multi or monohull, are not built to cross oceans and they do not perform well. It is just that, a myth. The safety factor for production catamarans may have been an issue to a degree about 10 or 15 years ago when these vessels were still very new in production but that has completely changed with modern technology.

The Drinking & Eating Man's Guide To The BVI by Julian Putley
Julian Putley is one of my favourite authors from the island and his latest book now in it's 4th edition, leads the reader to many of the local watering holes, beach bars and restaurants around the BVI. There are nearly 40 establishments mentioned in the book and all of them offer a freebie of some kind upon presenting the book with the coupon. Once stamped by the establishment, it makes for a great souvenir. Julian also provides the reader with some witty one-liners, funny comments and short stories. It really is brilliant and fun!
MagicEzy Chip Fix: This innovative product was developed by MagicEzy CEO Warwick David Lindsay, It is designed to easily fix scratches in gelcoat with little skill or effort. This makes repairs as simple as filling the damage, smooth the area, and letting it dry. The result is an effective, water-resistant, permanent surface repair that can be sanded and drilled. “Repairing cosmetic damage to fiberglass boat surfaces has traditionally been a difficult, messy and time consuming job — and the results were often poor,” said Lindsay. “My 30 years refining automotive touch-up systems told me that there had to be a better way.” MagicEzy was born.
